Follow the story of Romans in Carmarthenshire. Embark on a journey through time that leads you through the front door of a Roman marching camp and introduces you to the soldiers in charge of a Roman fortress.

Y Pigwn, near the Usk reservoir, is currently a bare landscape with little at-a-glance evidence of human activity. However, an army of approximately 5000 Roman soldiers stopped here overnight almost 2000 years ago, on route to conquer the west. At close by Waun Ddu, a permanent fortlet was then built to retain Roman control.

This app will guide you in their footsteps, and illustrates the earthwork ramparts and wooden palisades of which little trace remains. It will prepare you for a journey that is entertaining as well as educational, and you can find out about other Roman sites to visit in Carmarthenshire. For example, take a GPS-aided walk around Garn Goch hill fort and imagine how its inhabitants would have defended their territory against the Roman invaders.

Warning: continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
